History

Our History

Rip was founded in 2014 with the goal of making a close knit team in Portland that was going to work hard, putting in the effort to get better and win, while also being really good friends and a social outlet. We wanted a high spirited, fun team to both play for and for others to play against. We have really tried to make that a reality and the team has grown immensely since it's inception. Gil and Austin were the only two of the founding group that were still involved in 2016, and now only Austin remains. Roughly eight players that were with us that first year are still with us today. Our word of the year for this inaugural season was "Development". We accomplished that.

In 2015 our goal was to continue building, to retain a team core, and to build consistency and chemistry. We wanted to make regionals, have more fun at sectionals, and to host a tournament, all with the word of the year being "Established". While we might not have done well at regionals, we accomplished all of that.

In 2016 our word of the year was "Investment". Our goals were to continue building and grow our team core, while also continuing to build consistency and chemistry. We wanted a coach, to travel, volunteer at PUFF events, go on a camping trip, reinforce leadership and a consistent positive mentality for everyone on the team, and make regionals and do well there. We excelled at some, failed at others. That being said, the things we accomplished set a really good precedent for years to come, while the things we failed at were both adjustable and fixable.

We succeeded at coaching the Portland youth. We succeeded at continuing to build and grow our team core by inviting everyone who was on the team the previous year back. We wanted a coach, and we got a great one. With the help of Mike Knapp, our team was more positive than ever, on and off the field. Our founding goals of making a close knit, high spirited team of good friends who hang out together was revitalized. Having succeeded at these goals is incredibly important for the future of our team.

We failed at traveling to more tournaments, playing new teams, and getting our name out there. We failed at going on a camping trip. We failed at performing up to the skill level we know we are at when it's game time at almost all of our tournaments. We failed at making it to regionals.

At sectionals we also lost sight of what this team is supposed to be about. We did not rely on our depth and chemistry we have worked hard towards building at practices. A lot of our dedicated players got mislead and wronged. Having failed at these goals is something we can learn from and take steps to prevent in years to come.

Now, in 2017, we are looking stronger than ever and our word of the year is "Undeniable". We expect to continue our growth. We expect to continue building this team. This team is supposed to be about playing hard, getting better, and then being friends and getting a beer after. While we lost some sight of that towards the end in 2016 when we strayed away from our faith in depth, we are going to come together this year with that common purpose of getting ourselves in a winning position at regionals.

Becoming a more and more competitive team results in a mentality of "we are going to make sacrifices to win". We made some of the wrong sacrifices in 2016. Instead of sacrificing our own team and it's members, together we all will be sacrificing time and energy for the team and each other to make us as better individuals and as a team.
